Whatcha Dune?

'Dune: Part One' is a visionary masterpiece from Denis Villeneuve, he never fails to bring aesthetics and gigantism into his worlds. This film, based off the book Dune (1965) by Frank Herbert, successfully depicts Herbert's world and is one of the best book to movie adaptations I have ever seen. If you don't like movies and you haven't read the book/have no understanding of the idea of Dune, I hate to say it- but this movie is not for you. The film, because it is part one, is laying out the groundwork we need to know for when the next movies in the series (hopefully) come out. It's slow and unemotional at times, but I can't imagine this film any other way. Villeneuve studied the book, you can see that in his work, and he has done a great job bringing it to life. This epic reminds me of Star Wars and I can imagine it will be a huge hit if given the chance. The film with its vibrant colors, sleek shots, mind-numbing sound, and extraordinary performances given by the actors was unlike any other film I have seen in IMAX. The special effects in this movie were seamless in integrating into the world of Dune, everything felt so real. Some of the sound mixing lost me, there were times when I could barely understand the words being spoken and I wished there were subtitles turned on in the theater. Sitting through two and a half hours of this film was a lot, but I'm willingly going to be doing it again. If you want to see more Zendaya, make sure you watch this film so we can get Part Two. Chani is such an important character in the next book it would be a shame to deprive Zendaya of this role. *Spoilers ahead* The ending of this movie left me feeling unresolved and upset. Paul and Jessica finally reach the Fremen and are accepted, and then the movie just. ends. While it sets up perfectly for the next movie, I can't shake the unfulfilled feeling after watching. This is how it reminds me of Star Wars, I never had to wait for those movies to come out, but now I'm paying the price in having to wait for whenever Part Two comes out, if it is even greenlit (I pray it will be). So go out and see Dune in IMAX while you can and suffer with me while we wait for Part Two.
